Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a fatal disease caused by a mutation of the feline coronavirus (FCoV). There is no approved treatment for FIP, but some owners have tried unlicensed antiviral drugs such as GS-441524 and Molnupiravir(EIDD-2801). In this study, it investigated the effectiveness and safety of EIDD-2801 for cats with FIP who failed or did not respond to GS-441524 therapy.

A study (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9612227/) surveyed 20 owners who switched their cats from GS-441524 to EIDD-2801. The reasons for switching were treatment failure/relapse, lack of response, intolerance to injections, or cost of therapy. The average cost of GS-441524 therapy was USD 3448.83 for the first round and USD 3509.09 for the second round. The average cost of EIDD-2801 therapy was USD 1045 for the four owners who reported paying for it. You can also get a quick cost estimation by the cost calculator here (https://www.fipcurerx.com/calc).

The results showed that 17 out of 20 cats (85%) achieved clinical remission after EIDD-2801 therapy, with an average duration of 12.4 weeks. Three cats died during or shortly after treatment. The most common side effects were vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss. Most owners (90%) were satisfied with their experience with EIDD-2801, but three were extremely dissatisfied.

This study suggests that EIDD-2801may be a promising alternative for cats with FIP who do not benefit from GS-441524 therapy. However, more research is needed to confirm its efficacy and safety, and to understand the factors that influence owner satisfaction.
